Subic NAGT Kicks Off TRAP Races
Age group triathletes see action at ACEA Subic Bay early morning on Sunday, January 29 for the first leg of the 2017 National Age Group Triathlon (NAGT) series. Other legs are scheduled for Mach 26 in Cebu and Cagayan de Oro on July 2.
Featured events include the standard distance races for triathletes 18 and above, sprint distance races for those 16 and above, and the super sprint races for athletes 13-16 years old. The NAGT is part of the sports development program of the Triathlon Association of the Philippines.
TRAP President Ramon Marchan remarked, “We have been using these same race routes for many years now and they are suited for new and returning triathletes coming from the December off-season. There are the short options- the sprint or the even shorter super sprint that allows triathletes gradual progression to longer distance races. The race course is arguably the fastest in the country and many personal best times have been achieved by our participants here.”
Another highlight is the elite category with the current members of the national team going head to head with triathletes who are aspiring to join the national team and who have done well in last year’s provincial and non-ITU triathlons. In an anticipated showdown, Nikko Huelgas, 2015 SEA Games Men’s Triathlon Gold Medallist; Edward Macalalad, and John Chicano go up against Paul Jumamil of Bohol.
“This is part of our Elite Talent ID Program,” explained Marchan, “We know that there are other talents that have not done ITU type racing who might be worthy of inclusion in the PHI Team and we arranged for the participation of these athletes.”
One more significant race takes place in the Super Sprint which features the 2018 Youth Olympic Games aspirants. The NAGT Subic Super Sprint is one of nine pinpointed points races in the Philippine Buenos Aires YOG Qualifying Series.
After the 3 points races held in 2016, Lauren Plaza, Karen Manayon, and Nicole Eijansantos lead the women qualifiers and all 3 will be competing at Subic. Among the boys, all 7 aspirants who have garnered points in the Qualifying Series will also race; led by leaders Wacky Baniqued, Joshua Ramos, Mo Leuenberger, and Marcus Faytaren.
Youth Development Coach Anthony Lozada effused, “This Super Sprint will really be exciting. The 2017 races will count for more points in the Qualifying Series so the rankings can change drastically. Then we will find out who have been doing the work and have stepped up in development. Outstanding performers will be sent to high performance camps like the ASTC Talent ID Camp in Malaysia in February for more training.”
The Philippines has been chosen as the site for the Asian YOG Qualifying race in 2018 and plans are afoot to prepare the country’s prospects for the 2018 YOG.
Race kits can be picked up at Harbor Point Mall from 10 AM to 6 PM. Race Briefing will be at 6 PM as well.
